![]() I only gave 4 stars because the lava wasn’t flowing as that was what we really wanted to see, the Helicopter flight itself is worth 5 stars. Disappointingly the lava wasn’t actually flowing but Ian took us as close as possible to see the little there was, despite this disappointment the aerial view of the island and the volcanic landscape is exceptional and surprisingly, the highlight turned out to be the massive waterfalls on the north side of the island- these tower several hundred feet tall and the pilot takes you very close giving an unbelievable view. Unexpectedly, this helicopter is air conditioned which is a real bonus as it can get very hot inside helicopters due to the massive windows. He was not only a superb pilot but gave commentary all throughout the flight which lasts about 1 hour 45 minutes. The pilot Ian put us at ease immediately by telling us about his 24 years as a US military helicopter pilot involving several theatres of active warfare as well as being a Blackhawk instructor. We could pay approx US$100 extra per person to sit in the front two seats next to the pilot which had quite a bit of extra space and and the best viewing by far We were collected from the 4 Seasons resort by the very friendly Derick who gave us lots of tips of things to do on the island and then did the safety briefing for the flight. The helicopters are designed for tours and aerial viewing 2. We had a choice of three companies and chose Sunshine Helicopters and were very pleased with the choice, mainly because: 1. ![]()
